GUSTAV KLUTSIS (1895-1938) [DEVELOPMENT OF TRANSPORTATION UNDER THE 5-YEAR PLAN.] 1929. 281/2x20 inches. Condition A-: creases in image. Born in Latvia, Klutsis studied at the influential Svomas/Vkutemas art school under Malevitch and Pevsner (1918-192) and then went on to become a founding member of "October," a group of artists dedicated to serving the needs of the proletariat all over the USSR. Klutsis became the most prolific virtuoso of the art of photomontage, designing emblematic posters to inspire the Communist cause throughout the twenties and thirties. In 1938, for all of his exceptional work for the cause, Stalin had Klutsis arrested and executed. This rare poster is archetypical of his mastery of photomontage and command of the New Typography. Klutsis visually explains one of the goals of the 5 Year Plan: the size of Russia's rail fleet will grow, as will the area around the country that is laid with tracks. Of note is the man on the camel, which not only catches the eye, but also expresses some of the backwardness of the country that will also be left behind. The color scheme of the poster is extremely unusual for Klutsis, who predominantly worked with red. Modern Poster 147, Word & Image p.72, Weill p. 147 no. 244.
